Gone with the Wind is a American epic historical romance film adapted from the novel, of the same name , by Margaret Mitchell. Set in the American South against the backdrop of the American Civil War and the Reconstruction era, the film tells the story of Scarlett O'Hara, the strong-willed daughter of a Georgia plantation owner.

It follows her romantic pursuit of Ashley Wilkes, who is married to his cousin, Melanie Hamilton, and her subsequent marriage to Rhett Butler, which ends in a tragedy. A A year before it was even released there was a massive publicity campaign. The ceremony on the opening night in Atlanta, was on a par that had never been seen before or since. The NAACP fought long and hard with Selznick to get the racism toned down, which was too close to the book , outrageous in its depictions also wildly inaccurate and romanticized and a runaway bestseller.. Left wing groups and unions protested, picketed, and wanted a boycott. A suggestion for those who don't get why people complain about it, is to imagine you are black and watching this movie with your kid.

Ah yes, the good old days of the antebellum south when the slaves loved being " simple minded darkies" on the plantations, their natural state said the brave Confederate generals. Being whipped and beaten and lynched and living in filth and poverty and worked to death and forbidden to learn to read. And those heroic plantation owners, full of gallantry, riding off into the sunset to fight for the confederacy. Uh, uh. Ninety percent of the soldiers were the poor.

The rich could weasel out of it. Yes it's a " great movie " but so was "Triumph of the Will" which actually has had way more influence in film techniques.

Absolutely this movie should be shown, it should be shown in high schools so young people can see what it was like not so long ago,the way blacks were portrayed and thought of, Jim Crow was normal and how many people today don't have a problem with this movie and complain people should "just get over it". This is an iconic American movie.

A bit of interesting trivia, this was originally released with Clark Gable saying " I don't care" instead of "I don't give a damn". Selznick got the " damn" through the Hayes code by finagling with the racial remarks. People need to stop whining and crying about the racism in the movie. America's changing cultural standards have zero impact on the quality of old movies, good film-making is good film-making. It was , most people weren't exactly progressive by today's standards.
